What Does the Word Nigger Mean?

j0402670 When I was growing up, the Webster’s Dictionary said that nigger means:

An ignorant person and a derogatory term used towards Blacks and Africans from slavery.

During slavery, Blacks and Africans were denied the ability to read, which literally is ignorance.

Ignorance is actually not being denied logic or knowledge it is when you yourself refuse to learn , the fact they were denied this did not make them ignorant >.< just felt like clearing that up

Lindyn, thank you for your comment. I read the dictionary, they have changed with politics. I am educated, so who are you talking to? Thanks again, Tres Mali Scott’s Poetry & Short Stories

Hey Yall, stumbled upon this while researching the “N” word after a conversation with friends at the bar. I grew up with the defintion of an ignorant person. Now, that definition is difficult to find. As a “middle class white guy” I’d like to go ahead and “take it back” (If you’ve seen Clerks 2). I think we all should dispense with the BS, and go back to the original definition. I understand that terms may change with times and popular conception, but let’s be real. The word Nigger means an ignorant person…and just leave it as that. I think: we as a society mixed of almost every genome should 1) Embrace Nigger as one who is ignorant 2) Use it as a description for everyone that has forgotten that this country is: Of the People, By the People, and For the People…Kinda about people huh?…3) Realize that most of the “niggers” on earth don’t care about skin color, class (have no actual class), or culture. I prefer the original definition. Let’s be fare…the only “nigger” I know of is the one that thinks they are better than anyone else given finance.

Anthropologist, thank you for the comment, but let us also be real about brainwashing and race programing. In the United States of America, African People who are Black looking were all denied reading. So the word “Nigger” is more associated with “Black Looking People” throughout the world because of United States of American History. “His-Story” is who won the wars. In recent history, the U.S.A. has won most of the wars. So what the U.S.A. considers something is more powerful than you “White Guys”. I am a “Black Women” and when someone over uses the word “Nigger” like your comment, I find that you are the ignorant person. It is an insult to tell a “Black Women” who is educated about the word “Nigger” you use it. They don’t know that I am educated, sometimes they think they are talking about me. Not a “White Guy”. Again Thankx for the comment. So since you said “Nigger” some many times to a “Black Women” you might be a “Historical Nigger” ignorant about the history of what you are saying. She’s talking to you since you seem to not fully understand the definition of ignorant. I’m interested in where you acquired your “PHD” so my children do not attend that school. Maybe you just are to defensive of which education normally cures.

Sama, I did not finish my Ph.D., I am an ABD because of the word “Nigger” at Oklahoma State University. I have been reading the what words mean since I was a child, and the meaning changes as the wind. I remember what the real meaning is. They use to tell the world the truth. But now we live in the “Miseducation of the World”. Thank you for commenting, Tres Mali Scott’s Poetry and Short Stories

  3. Joshua says :

Hi, Tresmaliscott. Everything I’m about to write I’m positive you already know; however, I feel the need to put this out there. I’m extremely disappointed at the idea that the original definition of “nigger” is somehow “ignorant”. It isn’t the original definition. This is some terrible myth that is floating around perpetuated by racists and those who think it is funny to say the word “nigger” in order to excuse themselves and cover up their true intentions. If someone is even the least bit educated in a latin language, one would obviously see that the etymology of the word “nigger” comes from latin root word meaning “black”. This should set off bells in anyone’s head when reading the “ignorant” argument. How does one get the definition “ignorant” from the word “black”? It is obvious that this connotation was picked up over time and has obvious racial overtones. Sadly, this is something that will not die off anytime soon. Racism is still alive; the people just find new ways of concealing it.

Joshua, the problem, Joshua is that the word, world history wise, was used for a population of people that they did not allow to read. So they were ignorant. They then called “US” Negro, a reader, to sounding like “Nigger” to always remind us they we come from “IGNORANT”. So read this:
In fields we kneeled to pick cotton,
moved from our land it takes more than just hands to build roots.
The cast of slavery gives us a band.
Running from torture, in the water and through sand.
College and education a new socio-class.
We adapt to technology, because change is coming fast.
We build roots in our new land.
It takes more than just hands to build roots.

Some people are proud to say they have moved from “Nigger” to “Negro”.
